The Cite While You Write (CWYW) tool works with both EndNote Basic and EndNote 20 accounts in Microsoft Word. Using the CWYW plug-in makes creating and formatting in-text citations and reference lists easy!

Those looking to take full functionality of Endnote Basic can request an install of standalone CWYW plug-in for Word from the IT Help Desk using the Standard Software request form. You'll want to find and select EndNote Plug-in (Word) within the software selection dropdown menu in the form. This Word plug-in is used in conjunction with a free online EndNote Basic account. Users of Endnote 20 do not need to request the standalone CWYW plug-in, as it is bundled with the software.

Once installed, you should see the EndNote tab appear in the ribbon menu at the top of a new document. You may need to restart your computer for this to appear after the installation.

Don't see the EndNote CWYW Plug-In in Word?

Connecting to your EndNote Basic Account:

To connect to the articles and other research that you've saved in your online EndNote Basic library and begin citing them in a document, you'll need to sign into your EndNote Basic Account within Word. If you don't already have an EndNote Basic account, you can sign up for free at https://myendnoteweb.com/ to get started.
  1. Navigate to the EndNote tab and select Preferences from the Tools section.

  2. Use this popup to sign into your personal EndNote Basic account under the Applications tab.

Don't see EndNote CWYW Plug-In in Word after install?

Note: This advice is for the standalone CWYW plug-in for Endnote Basic (online). If you have the full Endnote 20 Desktop version, and are missing the CWYW plug-in, please contact IT to have them re-configure and apply a fix to your Endnote installation.

  1. Once IT has added the CWYW plug-in to your computer, you may need to configure the plug-in options within Microsoft Word if it hasn't automatically appeared in the ribbon at the top of your Word documents.

  2. To manually add the plug-in, open a new Word document and select Files.

  3. Next, select Options from the right-hand side of the page at the very bottom.

  4. From the popup window, select Add-ins from the menu on the left.

  5. Using the Manage dropdown list at the bottom of the popup, change it to Word Add-ins and press Go.

  6. From the next popup screen, make sure that EndNote Cwyw.dotm is selected.

  7. You can also deselect and/or remove any other reference management plugins you may have.

  8. Once you’re done, press OK.

  9. EndNote should now be visible in the ribbon at the top of your document.
