AHS' Infection Prevention and Control has a Best Practice Guideline on Bedside Computers and Electronic Devices

The frequency of cleaning mobile devices (in both clinical and non-clinical areas) is determined by the risk of cross contamination, the proximity of the device to the point of care and the usual amount of soiling (Table 1.  Cleaning and Disinfection of Electronic Devices):

  • Mobile devices taken into the patient’s room and used directly in the patient environment, should be cleaned before contact with a patient or patient’s environment; after contact with a patient or patient’s environment; and when visibly soiled.
  • Personal devices used outside of the patient care setting should be cleaned daily.

Please refer to the full IPC guidelines for specifics about how the guidelines should be applied in your circumstance, including the type of cleaning product to be used.
