AHS' Infection Prevention and Control has best practice guidelines on the Cleaning and Disinfection of Information Technology and Telephone Equipment and Devices, which indicate that "all touch surfaces of IT devices used at or near the point of care must be cleaned and disinfected with a hospital grade disinfectant."

The frequency of cleaning is determined by the risk of cross contamination, the proximity of the device to the point of care and the usual amount of soiling (Table 1):

  • Portable devices used at point of care should be cleaned daily and between patients.
  • Personal devices used outside of the patient care setting should be cleaned daily.

Please refer to the full guidelines for specifics about how the guidelines should be applied in your circumstance, including the type of cleaning product to be used.
